South Sikkim Overview
South Sikkim is the smallest district among the others in terms of area but is second population-wise. Namchi is the headquarters of this region and is one of the popular tourist destinations of South Sikkim. It is known for several village tourism destinations like Borong. Nature-loving. Spiritual tourists will have a great time visiting this part of Sikkim. South Sikkim offers boating, trekking etc.
The name Namchi means 'The Top of the sky'. Located at a height of about 1675m from sea level, it provides one of the most breathtaking views in the state. Apart from its sceneries, Namchi is known as a popular Buddhist pilgrimage destination. Temi Tea Estate, Ngadak Monastery are some of the other popular spots to visit here.
Ravangla has become a prominent name in the tourism industry since the establishment of the Buddha Statue and the Buddha Park. This has attracted several tourists across the country to this place and apart from these, you can witness mesmerizing mountain sceneries from here.
Situated beside the Rangeet River, Sikip is one of the most popular destinations among tourists in this part of Sikkim. Tourists visit this place mostly due to the views you can get from boating through the Rangeet River and it remains the major tourist attraction.
To promote religious and village tourism, the Siddeshwara Dham has been developed recently. The temple is situated at top of the Solophok hills and is a major tourist attraction for its religious values and mesmerizing landscapes.
Temi Tea Garden is considered to be the only tea estate in Sikkim that produces Internation standard tea and the production is in high demand in the market. It is situated in the Tendong hills and spreads over a large area.
Jorethang is a popular town in Sikkim and you can find this town on the way to Pelling. The town is situated at one of the lower points in Sikkim at only 300m from sea level. Jorethang is primarily famous for its cultural festival Maghe Mala and is a great place for adventure activities.
Rumtek village in Sikkim is majorly famous for the Rumtek Monastery which is one of the largest monasteries in the country. Visitors can witness the routines of Buddhist monks by visiting this place. The monastery offers some exquisite Tibetan architecture inside and breathtaking mountain views outside.
This place has the tallest statue of Guru Padma Sambhava. It is around 135ft built above Namchi town. The view from above is something to cherish and from the hilltop, you can witness the views of Darjeeling, Namchi, Mount Kanchenjunga.
Once you are at Bagdogra or Pakyong Airport in Gangtok, you can avail yourself of a taxi to reach South Sikkim.
If you are coming via railways, from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station, you can take a taxi to Gangtok and from there on, avail a cab service which will drop you to South Sikkim.
