West Sikkim Overview
West Sikkim is the second largest district in Sikkim. The headquarter of the town is Geyzing and it is connected with the capital Gangtok by a metalled road. West Sikkim is situated at an elevation of about 6500ft and the weather remains pleasant for most parts of the year. This place offers religious monasteries and temples and is a great spot for adventure enthusiasts. Trekking is one of the highlighting points of West Sikkim.
This place provides you with one of the best views to witness Mount Kanchenjunga. Pemayangstey Monastery is also a renowned place to visit in Pelling. It is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. Apart from these, Khecheopalri Lake, Rabdentse Ruins are some popular places to visit.
Geyzing is one of the most popular towns in West Sikkim. Tourists visit this place for its ethereal landscape of Mount Kanchenjunga and it is considered as an educational hub of Sikkim. Varsey rhododendron sanctuary, Yangtey are some of the popular tourist spots here.
Kaluk is a town situated in the Western part of Sikkim at an elevation of about 490m. The best time to visit Kaluk is around April when you can witness the beautiful rhododendron in a fully bloomed state. Pemyangtse Monastery, Rabtense Ruins are some of the popular destinations of Kaluk.
The name means 'the meeting place of three lamas' and this place carries a great significance for the people of Sikkim. Here you find the Dubdi Monastery, the oldest monastery in Sikkim and is considered a national monument. This place is known for its trekking offerings as well.
Legship is the gateway to West Sikkim and is located near the River Rangeet. Kirateshwar Mahadev Temple and Rangeet Dam are some of the popular tourist destinations in this region. Despite being a small town, Legship has plenty to offer for the tourists.
Uttarey is situated at about 6600ft and while coming here you will witness the Singsor Bridge, the second-highest bridge in Asia. During the winters, the mountains remain covered with snow, making it a beautiful spectacle to watch. The Kagyu Monastery, The Titanic Park are some of the notable places.
Tashiding is a small village situated near Pelling. The most popular attraction of this place is the Tashiding Monastery. It is built on top of the hill, thus people can watch it from long distances. Several cardamoms plantations can be found in Tashiding.
Rinchenpong offers a spectacular sight of mountains and sunrise. It is situated at a height of about 5576ft and is popular among tourists for trekking services. Rinchenpong Monastery, Poison Lake are some of the tourist attractions from this destination.
If you are coming via flight, you can either land at Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri or at Pakyong Airport in Sikkim. From there on, book a taxi that will lead you to West Sikkim.
If you are coming via railways, drop on New Jalpaiguri Station (NJP), from there on book a taxi to Gangtok. And from Gangtok, book another car to visit your final destination.
